Space to Create

Cornmill Art Space was set up in April 2016 as a not for profit art studio project. The studio is housed in the Old Cornmill building on Railway Road, Ilkley.

The studio is very light and airy and well equipped for a wide variety of drawing, painting, printmaking and craft practices. The mission of the project is simply to provide a dedicated space for art, craft and making. Workshops and courses are either arranged by the Cornmill itself or the space is rented out to artists/practitioners who would like to run courses. All proceeds go towards the rent and overheads of the space with any surplus being invested in the studio and art projects.

Events

PoliKana Friday 24th November 8pm

PoliKana is a PechaKucha night by any other name. Adopting the PK format of presentations/talks/rants/stories/manifestos using 20 slides for 20 seconds each. (Search for a background to PechaKucha). In PoliKana we aim to celebrate the plethora of local people with something to say.

This is a regular evening at the Cornmill Art Space with local creatives, thinkers, enthusiasts and people with the will to speak about anything they choose for the allotted 6mins 40secs.

With six speakers at each event it will prove to be an evening packed with ideas and provocations – questions and conversation are encouraged.

Maybe you would like to present at a future event? Come along and see that it’s not so daunting and play with the PK format.

Suggested contribution of £5 to cover room hire and the refreshments (drinks and nibbles).

Life Drawing Classes

We are currently holding life drawing classes on Thursday mornings 10am-12noon. These are very relaxed and supportive sessions that are suitable for beginners and experienced artists alike. All materials are provided as well as tea/coffee and home made flapjack if you’re lucky! The sessions are led rather than tutored but we are more than happy to guide, share strategies and talk about the process of drawing till the cows come home. Book your next class here.

Screen Printing Workshop

We are running four more of our screen printing workshops this term, the first on Sunday 29th October 1-4pm. Then every other Sunday with the last for this year on Sunday 10th December. The workshops will take you through the whole process from creating a suitable design through to pulling your own set of limited edition prints. By using a “low tech’ process of hand cut paper stencils it is possible to produce a three colour print during one afternoon session. This simple method of printing can produce wonderful and bold artworks, if you love colour you’ll love this workshop. There is a discount for booking all four workshops, ideal if you want to go deeper into print making and produce a body of work. Book here or get in touch via our contact page if you have any questions.

Oil Painting Course with Nigel Overton

The four week course will primarily be an introduction to effective oil painting techniques. People will be shown how to prepare and create good foundations for the painting, how to build layers of colour (“fat over lean technique”), working Alla Prima, Impasto and Scumbling. There will also be a discussion on the importance of using good materials and equipment. There will also be some work on effective composition.

The cost of the four classes will be £80. Oil paint , prepared boards and low odour thinners will be provided + tea & coffee.
